Magnificent  Ottoman Mihrab panel
Turkey, 19th Century
the cream  silk ground decorated in appliqué incorporating precious textiles  and embroidered in Gold and Silver metal  threads

With a central hanging lamp within a Mihrab, surrounded by vases issuing floral sprays, with  metal-thread fringe to edges,
Finished on all four sides with late 18th century gold metallic trim

SIZE  180cm by 260cm  Quite Heavy

One of the most beautiful textiles I have acquired.      VIEW VIDEO (third photo)

Provenance;  Donated by the Sisters of Newlands Convent in Middlesbrough to the The Bar Convent Trust in York,

Sympathetically restored by members of the City of York Embroiders Guild, mainly to completely stabilize the silk ground.  Relined with the addition of  a slightly padded interlining.

Restoration Truly amazing must have taken months to complete

PLEASE NOTE   A very similar (much smaller)  example sold at Bonhams London 12th November 2024.   LOT 76 Islamic and Indian Art.  See Last photograph
